The Mulungushi University Student Housing project was conceived as a major residential expansion adjacent to the existing campus, providing accommodation for approximately 10,000 students within a cohesive and sustainable living environment. The development is based on self-catering group units that encourage communal living, shared responsibility, and self-management within student “family” clusters.
The principal challenge was to deliver large-scale, affordable accommodation while maintaining operational efficiency and fostering social cohesion across a diverse student population. The design also sought to move beyond conventional dormitory models towards a more sustainable and community-oriented residential system.
The architectural response adopts a “Student Village” concept, organising housing into clusters of shared units within a mixed-use framework. Supporting amenities and commercial facilities enhance the viability and vibrancy of the development, while the spatial layout encourages interaction through clearly defined private, semi-private, and communal spaces.
The result is a self-sustaining residential community that integrates housing, social infrastructure, and economic activity into a unified model of student life, supporting both individual independence and long-term campus development.
